2021 NCCA-Artsplace Statewide Photography Competition

The NCCA-Artsplace Statewide Photography Competition is an annual event with the goal of exhibiting and acknowledging some of the finest photographers in Michigan while encouraging greater growth and achievement in the photographic community. With an entry deadline of July 19, photographers across the state are shooting and printing their favorite subjects for their entries in this year’s competition.

Michigan photographers, 18 years or older, are encouraged to take part in this juried competition. All photographic processes are accepted and each photographer may submit up to two pieces of work for the entry fee of $30. Members of NCCA-Artsplace may submit two pieces for a reduced entry fee of $25. All entries must be framed and ready to display.

Selected works submitted to the competition will be exhibited in the NCCA-Artsplace Ray and Phyllis Jansma Exhibition Gallery August 5 through September 8. The award announcements will be held livestream on August 6 at 6:00 p.m. Photographers awarded first, second or third place will be provided a cash prize. Honorable mention pieces will also be selected. The juror for 2021 is West Michigan photographer, Dianne Carroll Burdick.

Juror: Dianne Carroll Burdick
A Western Michigan University graduate with a BFA in Photography, Dianne is a free-lance photographer in Grand Rapids. Her clients have included USA Today, Grand Valley State University, the Grand Rapids Art Museum, the Grand Rapids Symphony, the Public Museum of Grand Rapids, Porter Hills, The Salvation Army, United Way, GR Magazine, BLUE magazine, ArtPrize and Opera Grand Rapids. She is a Continuing Studies Instructor at Kendall College of Art and Design where she teaches Photography/ Digital. She has participated in over fifty art exhibitions and her work is included in six books. Dianne is the recipient of thirty awards in Photography.

Juror: Kelly Walkotten

Kelly combines her passions of photography and writing to bring the wonders of nature to others. She is an avid scuba diver, whose images, articles, and blogs have brought the undersea world to readers of the PSA Journal and Fem Worldview Magazine. Kelly lives in the greater Grand Rapids area and her images have been exhibited in many venues around West Michigan including ArtPrize and Festival of the Arts. Kelly has presented to numerous camera clubs and civic organizations, along with teaching Photography, Photoshop, and Lightroom. She has been published in Photographic Society of America’s Journal: “Photographing Mandarin Fish”- January 2013
“Pika- Rock Rabbits of the High Mountains” – March 2014 “Nudibranchs – Jewels of the Sea” – January 2016. She also leads photography workshops.

Mirrored Word on Wood with Tracy Kehr September 28 and October 5

Class Fee: $45($40 Members) Ages 16 – Adult
Add some glitz to your home with this 9”x 24” whitewashed wood sign with mirrored or even stained glass mosaic lettering. In this class students will learn to cut glass and then adhere the pieces to the background wood. Choose from the words “Love”, “Hope”, or another word that will fit the space.

Juror: Anthony Thompson

Anthony Thompson is Professor of Photography in the School of Communications at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, where he is a former Director of the school and is now head of the school’s photography program. He earned a B.S. in Physics from the University of Dallas and an M.F.A. in Photography from Washington University in Saint Louis. A native of Colorado, he has lived and worked in Rome, Italy as a freelance photographer, and has previously worked as a photographer in several mid-west commercial advertising studios.
Anthony’s personal photographic work has been included in numerous juried exhibitions nationally and internationally, including several one and two-person exhibitions at university and commercial galleries. His recent work has included a documentary project on nuclear weapons facilities in the American west, and a series of work in photogravure and other alternative processes that combines photography, printmaking, and sculpture. His work is included in several collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago-Midwest Photographer’s Project, the Wisconsin State Historical Society, the Rocky Flats Cold War Museum collection in Colorado, in addition to several university and private collections. His photographs have been published in Vision Magazine, High Country News, View Camera magazine, Camera and Darkroom magazine, and in academic journals.

Entry Guidelines

• Must be Michigan resident, 18 or older, to submit work.
• Work must be framed and ready to display or finished appropriately.
• All photographic processes are accepted.
• NCCA reserves the right to decline artwork for any reason.
• Accepted work may be placed for sale during the exhibit.
• A 30% commission is charged on all sales during exhibit.
• Each eligible photographer may submit up to two photographs.
• All entries must be delivered to NCCA by April 13, 8:00 p.m.
• Entry labels must be firmly affixed to the back of the entries.
• Please indicate the photographic process in your description. For example, 35 mm, digital, medium format, silver gelatin, sepia tone, etc.
• Do not submit prints that have been previously exhibited at NCCA-Artsplace.
• Work may be shipped, include pre-paid return shipping labels if you would like us to return work.
• The NCCA will take every precaution to ensure protection of artwork, however, we will not be responsible for any loss, damage or theft.
• Any artwork left after June 10 may become property of NCCA unless other arrangements have been made.
• Send or drop off completed entry form, framed work and include a payment made to NCCA for the non-refundable entry fee of $25 Member or $30 Non-Member, to:
