Dianne Carroll Burdick – June 2-August 1

An exquisite wedding of hand-colored photographs of the natural world and elegant haiku.

Selected hand colored photographs with accompanying haiku poetry from the book Listen the Landscape, is on display at the Dogwood Center Lobby Gallery through August 1.

Overview

Mirroring the human response to the natural world, this book is a rare synthesis of stunning landscape photography and understated haiku poetry. Dianne Carroll Burdick has photographed what she sees but expressed what she feels by hand-coloring her photographic images. LindaNemec Foster has followed the traditional form created by Japanese poets over five hundred years ago to pen elegant haiku.

Together the two explore edges — ocean meeting sand, lakes meeting grass, trees meeting sky. These landscapes of color and sound will usher you into quiet, meditative spaces where you can truly listen to yourself and the environment around you.

NCCA-Artsplace Exhibit: Michigan Artist Blacksmith Association

Exhibit: Michigan Artist Blacksmith Association – March 30 – May 2

Jansma Gallery at
NCCA-Artsplace,
13 E. Main St., Fremont,
231-924-4022.

Blacksmithing has been a profession since man discovered iron and needed people to manipulate it into useful items for the times such as weapons, household goods, tools and decorations. The Industrial Revolution (the age of machines) saw an end of the era when every community had a blacksmith. Renewed interest in lost arts and a desire for more one-of-a-kind, handmade items has caused a resurgence in the art of blacksmithing.

Tim Carr along with other members of the Michigan Artist Blacksmith Association will be featured in this exhibition of the finished wrought iron artwork, tools and process of the art of blacksmithing.

January 6-31 Sharon Pollice Exhibit

Sharon Pollice – “Bold Nature” Exhibit
January 6-31
Reception, Thursday,
January 22, 5:30 p.m.
Jansma Gallery
at NCCA-Artsplace,
13 E. Main St., Fremont. 231-924-4022.

West Michigan artist, Sharon Pollice has known her passion for art from an early age. Her talent and excitement in learning about art lead to her teaching it for over two decades. Now retired she spends her time traveling with a camera, capturing moments that have become the source of new work. Sharon’s bold and colorful, often playful depictions of the natural landscape, flora and fauna, beloved pets and favorite wildlife show her whimsical and energized view of the world through her oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings.

Sharon’s scientific approach to her work makes color imagery come alive and initiates discovery and fascination. “In my work, every mark, no matter how small, makes a difference to the final vision. I strive for the complexity of images. I love large formats and brilliant color. Believing that the tragedy of beauty is its inevitability to fade, I try to capture that
fleeting moment and make one pause and absorb the wonder of what surrounds us,” states Sharon about her work.

Hana Sawyer – Turbulance – October 14 through December 20

HanaHana’s charcoal and graphite work evokes a sense of the power of nature, the changing currents of life, it’s beginnings and turbulent moments. These powerful abstract drawings are at once familiar and distant. Themes of both destruction, creation and the expanse of our universe come to mind when viewing these powerful drawings.

Hana has recently had pieces from this series accepted into the Muskegon Museum of Art Regional Show, Grand Rapids Festival and Artprize 2014. We’re thrilled to have her work at the Dogwood Center. A reception will be held on November 8, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Dogwood Center for Performing Arts. Stop in and see her work October 14 through December 20, 2014

5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Jansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace, 13 E. Main St., Fremont. 231-924-4022.
Steve Barber teaches at Central Michigan University and uses a technique of working with wax as a cold medium applied over colored grounds, scratching through the surface with pencil, engraving an image and applying more layers of color to the remaining wax surface. This series was inspired by Steve’s time spent in New Zealand with the indigenous Maori people.

Cat Crotchett

Cat Crotchett

Cat Crotchett lives and works in Kalamazoo sharing her passion for encaustic all over the world by teaching workshops in Indonesia, New England, Chicago, and locally for Western Michigan University and the KIA. Her modular works are inspired by her time spent working in Indonesia where she shifted the focus of her work to patterns.
Christine Towner describes her encaustic painting as a complex, colorful journey into nature. As an abstract expressionist she uses the intuitive side of representing nature by choosing the ancient medium of encaustic wax and oil paint.
