Steve Barber teaches at Central Michigan University and uses a technique of working with wax as a cold medium applied over colored grounds, scratching through the surface with pencil, engraving an image and applying more layers of color to the remaining wax surface. This series was inspired by Steve’s time spent in New Zealand with the indigenous Maori people.

Cat Crotchett

Cat Crotchett lives and works in Kalamazoo sharing her passion for encaustic all over the world by teaching workshops in Indonesia, New England, Chicago, and locally for Western Michigan University and the KIA. Her modular works are inspired by her time spent working in Indonesia where she shifted the focus of her work to patterns.
Christine Towner describes her encaustic painting as a complex, colorful journey into nature. As an abstract expressionist she uses the intuitive side of representing nature by choosing the ancient medium of encaustic wax and oil paint.

Our goal is to exhibit and acknowledge the finest photographers in the state of Michigan and encourage greater growth and achievement in the photographic community. The Jurors, Brad and Todd Reed of Ludington, have selected the photographs and are very excited to announce the winning selections during the free public reception on Saturday, May 3, 10:00 a.m. – Noon.

Born near the shores of Lake Michigan, Lee Ann Frame currently teaches at Muskegon Community College
and owns Norris Creek Printmaking Studio. She earned a MFA in printmaking, is a member of the Society of American Graphic Artists and a signature member of the International Experimental Artists Society.

SONY DSCAndrew Jagniecki’s background is in printmaking, drawing, painting, and sculpture. He likes to work with common things we see every day, landscapes and landmarks, animals, still life, people and plant life. A retired educator, Andrew likes working on woodcuts, etchings, and paintings. His work has been included in many regional shows and as far afield as Kyoto International Woodcut Show in Japan.

Together LeeAnn and Andrew will exhibit many different examples of printmaking including wood cut block, lithograph, and inaglio/etching along with many different techniques within each type.

Parks In Focus

Parks In Focus

January 8 – February 8, 2014 in the Corridor Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace
TrueNorth has been partnering with Parks in Focus a program through the Udall Foundation based in Arizona since 2007. Parks in Focus aims to connect underserved youth to nature through the use of photography. Since their partnership began in 2007 they have been providing outdoor photography education to Newaygo County youth, including an immersion trip to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Seney National Wildlife Refuge. This year they received a mini-grant though the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) administered through Lowell Arts! as well as a Summer Youth Initiative (SYI) grant from the Fremont Area Community Foundation to produce this wonderful exhibit of the Parks In Focus youth participant’s photography.

Quiltangle, Free Motion Quilt Designs with Sandy Dekker

Sandy creates the most amazing hand painted and free stitched quilts that look like intricate zentangle designs.  They are pure creativity.  She will share her knowledge in this new NCCA-Artsplace class.  Each participant will complete a 16”x 16” quilt perfect for becoming a wall hanging or pillow top.  Participants should be experienced machine quilters, bring their own free motion sewing machines with darning or open toe foot.  All other materials provided.  Please arrive early enough to set up your sewing machine.  What a great opportunity to create a wonderful Christmas gift. Check out Sandy’s quilts in the NCCA-Artsplace Gallery.

NCCA-Artsplace Winter Photo Contest – Winners Announced

The NCCA-Artsplace Winter Photo Contest is a free contest open to everyone. The deadline for entry was January 12.

Photographs will be on display at NCCA-Artsplace through February 6.
