“Over several years Brenda Beerhorst has developed an intuitive process of creating free form shapes in overlapping colorful layers of acrylic, gouache, and ink on wooden panels. With each successive layer, shapes and color blocks are created, rearranged or even covered completely. Between layers, delicate and timeworn textures are made through reductive sanding. She works on multiple panels simultaneously, though the colors and patterns can vary significantly from one piece to the next as the works take on distinct personalities.” -Michael DeMaagd Rodriguez

As the wife of well-known Grand Rapids painter, Rick Beerhorst, and the mother of six artist children, Brenda has long been a familiar fixture in the West Michigan arts community. Raising a household of eight is no light task, and when her family was younger it was understandably difficult to find time and space to cultivate a consistent studio practice.

Last Garden Dress by Amy Wilkinson

An energetic synergy is released when Lisa Medendorp’s abstract paintings and the surrealistic sculptures of Amy Wilkinson get together. The dancing, twisting painted forms on canvas create a fitting surround to the restrained tension held in sculptural suspension.

Sentinel by Lisa Medendorp

The totemic, somewhat figurative forms in Medendorp’s paintings evoke mythological styles, The Lake Marcher’s series can be interpreted as being mythological defenders of the environment who march across Lake Michigan with the ever changing weather fronts.

Wilkinson utilizes wrapped wire and other fibers to create an eclectic weaving of reclaimed materials. Her themes involve strength, beauty, and perseverance lightly veiled in nostalgia, and encourage frugality when considering our resource allocations.

The two artists share a respect for the environment that is evident by the re-purposing of discarded materials in Wilkinson’s rustic assemblages that are in harmony with the themes that underlie Medendorp’s paintings. The use of interwoven shapes and materials in the works by both artists echo the interconnected web of nature.

Three Sessions: June 26-29 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
July 17-20 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
August 14-17 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
It’s never too early to encourage an interest in art. During this class, beginning students will learn to use a variety of materials to explore drawing, painting, cutting, gluing and clay in a creative, nurturing environment.

Amazing Africa Class Fee $12.00 Ages 6-8
Two Sessions: June 26-29 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
July 31-August 3 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Pack your passport and bags for a journey to West Africa! Your tour guide, Amy Knuver, back from a year living in Togo, Africa, will teach you about this amazing continent while you create masks, clay sculptures, prints and more.

Summertime Fun Class Fee $12.00 Ages 6-8
Two Sessions: July 10-13 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
August 14-17 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Capture the fun times of summer in colorful works of art. Students will learn to use paint, papers, clay and a variety of other materials to create a camping landscape, melting ice cream cones, bug tiles and a picnic lunch through art.

Students will learn about portraits, landscapes, still life, sculpture and explore using a variety of materials in unexpected ways.

What is that rustling in the leaves? Students will use animals as their inspiration for each project. Painting, drawing, sculpture, clay and printmaking will be explored.

Build it! Learning About Architecture
Class Fee $15 Ages 9-12
Two Sessions: July 10-13 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
August 7-10 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Architecture surrounds you! Students will use clay, printmaking, cardboard and paint to design interesting buildings. Learn about columns, onion shaped domes, dentils, fish scale shingles and more as you become a budding architect.

Sculpture: A Journey to the Third Dimension
Class Fee $15.00 Ages 9-12
Two Sessions: July 24-27 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
August 7-10 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Take a break from the flat world of two dimensional art and enter the world of FORM. Using metal, cardboard, paint and paper mache we will create amazing pieces of art!

Art is Delicious! Class Fee $15.00 Ages 9-12

July 24-27 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Using food as an inspiration we will explore clay, papers, collage, mixed media and drawing to design art pieces that will look good enough to eat while learning about some well known artists that became famous for their giant hamburgers and soup cans. This is a recipe for some amazing art.

African Safari Class Fee $15.00 Ages 9-12

If you love to draw, this is the class for you! Sharpen your skills and learn some new techniques while working in a variety of mediums including graphite, charcoal, ink and pastel. Discover the tricks of perspective, how to capture light and shadow, make contour line drawings and how to add texture to your drawings.

Get muddy at NCCA-Artsplace! This class is limited to 6 participants per session so each participant will get some experience throwing on the potter’s wheel! Students will also learn how to hand build, connect, and roll a slab! Learn several different finishing techniques including glazing, staining and painting. All work goes home the final day of class.

Within the world of art, Picardo continues to expose the synthesization of his universe through expressive grounds of astounding interpretation. Always showcasing the manifestations of human existence within life’s procession, Erick Picardo is slowly approaching a shift towards the realm of contemporary art. Defined by the dominance of foreground, size, and supremacy of color, the role of the long and oval-shaped faceless bodies in his paintings appear as a blurring balance between abstraction and mysterious expression that always quickly show to one’s eye, that the world in which his creations come from, is not our own. It is easy to recognize cubist stylings and an influence of artists like Pablo Picasso while Erick expresses the rhythms of music and life of the Latin community through his paintings. From the automatic captivation of Picardo’s gorgeous paintings of oil and acrylic mixtures, the viewer cannot help but to notice the richness and beauty of the colors he chooses and how these colors help display the powerful harmony of complex values in society that sometimes pose a conflict to each other. The work of Picardo has been exhibited nationally and internationally and he currently resides in Grand Rapids, where he continues to grow his profound artistry while also working with the Latin community.

Jane, Lauren, and Brian Stroschin are excited to present “Stroschins 3.” As Jane has known she wanted to be an artist since the age of four, she included her passion and talent for art and creativity in raising her children. The house was always filled with paints, brushes, pencils, clay, picture books, and art history books. Now that Lauren and Brian have added their own style and experiences to their art, and Jane’s direction and talent has continued to grow and evolve; the three of us are proud to exhibit our individual styles together.

Brian’s abstract compositions and characters inspire the viewer’s creative interpretations. Lauren’s photos beautifully capture her worldwide explorations and deep respect for our natural world. As an award winning photographer and painter, Jane’s paintings of abstract background and high realism subject matter will stimulate both your creativity and appreciation of the grace of nature. We hope you will enjoy this unique family’s three styles of artistic expression.

If you have always wanted to try a painting class or want to brush up on your painting skills then the Art Uncork’ed Acrylic series of painting classes are perfect. Sharon is an accomplished painter that will gently lead you through the painting process. In this class participants will learn to paint a cardinal in a winter setting.

Watercolor Winterscape with Cheryl Gould

Ages 16-Adult
In this class we will work with the basic elements of a winter landscape; sky, snow, trees and sunlight. We will be pouring, spraying, spattering, salting, stamping, and also using brushwork to create a winter scene. Perhaps it will be something you could use for a Christmas card? Several photos will be provided as reference material, but also feel free to bring you own reference photos to work from. We may be working on several scenes during the day in order to let the paintings dry between steps. Bring a lunch.

This is a perfect opportunity to learn technique and
color theory with artist Sharon Smithem. Each person
will use acrylic paint to create a dramatic close up of a
sunflower on a 16”x20” canvas. This is a fun evening
for a group of friends.
