the FACF Youth Advisory Committee and Michigan Council for
Arts and Cultural Affairs Minigrant Program.
These exciting and exploratory art classes are designed
to give middle and high school students a chance to
learn about art styles and mediums they may not get in a
classroom. All materials provided. April 12 & 19 Leather
Journal class requires students attend both days.
March 1 – Japanese Kawaii Polymer Clay Charms
Kawaii: “lovable”, “cute”, or “adorable” – is the quality of
cuteness in the context of Japanese culture. Use polymer
clay sculpting techniques to create Kawaii Neko cats, or
similar figures/pendants in this fun sculpture class.
March 15 – Basketry Knots/Cane Wrapped Rocks
Many cultures use the art of knot tying and basketry to
create functional art forms or to adorn items. Students
will each weave a basketry knot pattern using cane
around a smoothed Michigan stone.
March 22 – Pysanky Eggs
A pysanka is a Ukrainian Easter egg, decorated with traditional
Ukrainian folk designs using a wax-resist method.
The word pysanka comes from the verb pysaty, “to write”,
as the designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax
and dipped into dyes.
April 12 & 19 – Artisans Leather Journal
Leather cutting, riveting, stamping and tooling will all be
learned and utilized in creating an inspirational journal for
writing, drawing, music and more.
April 26 – Polymer Clay Caning
Canes are generally comprised of simple patterns that
when combined form a quilt-like display of colors and
designs. Canes can be used to make beads for jewelry
projects. You can also use slices from canes for items like
buttons or to cover home decor items.
